Traditional data governance was designed to manage structured enterprise data: databases, access policies, storage configurations, compliance documentation. It’s a process-driven discipline – data stewards manually classify information, review quality rules, approve access requests, and update records on scheduled cycles. 1. AI Inventory and Classification
Governance begins with visibility. Organizations need a complete, current inventory of every AI tool in use across the enterprise – approved and unapproved, browser-based and desktop-installed, including AI features embedded in operating systems and productivity platforms.
Each tool should be risk-classified based on what data it can access and how it handles that data. High-risk tools — those processing personally identifiable information, protected health information, intellectual property, financial records, or regulated data — require the strictest controls. Lower-risk general productivity tools can be managed with a lighter touch. Without this inventory, governance has no foundation.
2. Data Classification Tied to AI Policy
