Overview

Claude, developed by Anthropic, is available as a native desktop application for Windows and macOS, as a browser-based experience at claude.ai, and through two specialized professional tools: Claude Code — an agentic coding assistant that operates in the terminal and integrates with IDEs including VS Code and JetBrains — and Claude Cowork, a persistent agentic workspace that can read, edit, organize, and create files within a user-designated folder, execute multi-step tasks in parallel, and work through a growing library of plugins across legal, sales, marketing, and data analysis workflows. As of early 2026, Claude also supports Computer Use (currently a research preview on macOS), which allows it to control the desktop directly: opening applications, navigating the browser, filling spreadsheets, and running developer tools. Dispatch, a companion feature, allows users to assign tasks to Claude from their phone and receive real-time progress updates as Claude completes them on the desktop. These capabilities position Claude not just as a chat interface but as an active participant in the local work environment — with access to files, applications, and system functions on the user’s machine.
